Companionable

The next morning, Marisol asks her mother if Gregory has been found. Mrs. Rainey follows all the neighborhood news on social media.

“Not yet,” she says. “But I certainly hope they find him. His owners are very sad. They have no idea how he managed to get out.”

“He probably got lonely and hungry,” Marisol says. Lonely for neighborhood children because he’s hungry for a snack, she adds silently to herself.

“I doubt that,” Mrs. Rainey says. “His owners take good care of him.”

It’s before nine o’clock. Oz is still asleep. Mrs. Rainey wakes up before everyone. She spends the early morning at the dining room table, enjoying her coffee and breakfast. Sometimes she reads her mystery novels. Sometimes she reads things on her phone. Right now, she’s reading on her phone.

Marisol scoops cat food into Beans’s bowl, then she makes cereal for herself. It’s cornflakes, which isn’t very exciting, but she adds lots of sugar. She adds so much sugar that it looks like a little snowy mountain. Marisol stirs it in before her mother sees it.
